Martial Arts --Learning to Generalize for Martial Success

Even the most diligent martial artists sometimes slip into bad habits. Often, these bad martial habits develop out of comfort.

Do you study martial arts in a class? Work out with a group of fellow martial artists?

Think about your group of favorite martial artists. Now, be honest with yourself -- do you have a favorite training partner?

Do you like this person? Easy to get along with?

 

Leaving Your Martial-Arts Comfort Zone

If youıd like to improve martial arts, may I suggest that you spend more time away from your favorite training partner.

Note: The exception to the rule is when you are attending seminars where you learn new information. Then, you could train with someone familiar. Your friend can help you remember details later.

If youıd like to improve your skill in the martial arts by leaps and bounds, then practice your techniques on avariety of people. Get used to fighting:

* Fast, speed darting attackers

* Bouncy movers

* Big, slow giants

* Big, fast giants

* Flexibles, who are impossible to wrist lock

* Clumsy movers

* Crisp technique masters

* Fluid wet noodles

Get accustomed to fighting them all.

 

Martial Arts Generalization

If you fight all these different styles of practitioners, you will learn to generalize your techniques.

Martial artists often ask me how come my wrist locks are so effective. Apparently, they have problems with some of the more Œdifficult locks.ı

The key to this martial success is the way I practice. I perform wrist locks on a variety of people. During martial-arts class, I make it a point to work out with a variety of students.

I leave that comfort zone. ( I donıt always train with my wife, Kate.)

Also, youıll develop a lot more confidence. It wonıt seem strange perfomring your martial-arts moves on someone unfamiliar.
