Street Fight -- How to Size Up an Attacker

by Keith Pascal

Wouldn't it be great to be able to know everything about your opponent, before you had to fight him or her?

Assess your opponent

In old times, a challenger would go to a martial arts school. There, he would challenge the master.

But the master was no fool. First the challenger had to fight the lower level students, working his way up the ladder, progressing to more advanced students.

Besides tiring out the challenger, this gave the master an excellent opportunity to study the challenger's every move.

You and I aren't so lucky. We may have to fight our own battles. Real self defense. A honest-to-goodness street fight!

My focus is on practical martial arts -- ways to defend yourself. So, we aren't talking about sizing up a sparring opponent.

We need to size up an attacker, a street fighter, probably approaching very fast.

You don't have much time

Get any quick clue that you can:

* Is the attacker left-handed or right-handed?

* Is the dominant hand forward or back? (boxers keep strong side to the rear. JKD fighters fight with the best side forward.)

* Are any of your attacker's hand positions, foot positions, or movement, indicative of a style familiar to you?

* If your goal is to avoid playing your attacker's game in a fight, is there anything that indicates what kind of "game" he or she is playing?
